History and Introduction of Jyotish Shastra (Astrology)

Astrology is a part of Vedas. Vedas is world`s oldest ancient philosophical and compressed knowledge of literature. Said by Manu: ''भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च सर्वं वेदात्प्रसिध्यति'' -in Manu Smruti. Through Veda we can find out about all past, present and future happenings.

Veda is four kinds i.e. (1)    Rugveda /Rikveda, (2) Yajurveda, (3) Samveda, (4) Atharva veda.  Also have four kind of Upaveda i.e. (1) Ayurveda (medicine), (2) Dhanurveda (Military Science), (3)Gandharva Veda (Music and dance art), (4) Arthaveda  (Arthashastra)(Economics and Politics) or Sthapatya Veda (Architecture science).  The Vedanga (vedāṅga, "limbs of the Veda") are six auxiliary disciplines traditionally associated with the study and understanding of the Vedas. i.e. (1) Shiksha (Siksha): Phonetics, Phonology and Morphophonology (Sandhi)  (2)Kalpa (Kalp): Ritual (3) Vyakarana (Vyakaraṇ): Grammar (4) Nirukta (Nirukt): Etymology (5) Chhandas : Measurement of  Poem (6) Jyotisha (Jyotis): Astrology

Why Jyotish is called Vedanga?

The astrology is part of Veda and its eye. Veda have six organs.

How Astrology is born?

Because of curiosity in man for knowing about everything, astrology has born and developed. Analyzing nature of man becomes scientist, Eagerness to know about sun and other planets and stars man find out astrology. It was the curiosity to know how day and night is happening, how the changing of the seasons winter, summer, and monsoon, stars, moon and sun are appearing  in the sky and daily morning sun is rising and at the dusk or twilight sun set and daily these are happening.  Only in the night moon, plants, and stars are appearing. In addition, people were eager to know how Tides and ebbs are happening in the sea, why aerolite or meteor and falling of stars in the sky.  Why sun rises in one direction only and sets in the opposite direction. Why rain or monsoon is coming after summer only, why winter is not coming before monsoon. Therefore, intellectuals and scholars were analyzed and researched and solved out their doubtful said questions.

Definition of astrology:

What is Astrology?

As explained above, astrology is eye of Vedanga   ( ''ज्योतिषं नयनं स्मृतं'' '' ज्योतिषं नयनं विदुः'') that everybody should  know, because every calculations are based on it.

Ancient Indian astrology is known as Vedic Jyotish Shastra. Word "Vedic" means " knowledge of  truth". Word "Jyotish" is combination of words "Jyoti" and "Ish", which mean "light" and “God" respectively. So "Vedic Jyotish" means "True Light of God".  Jyotish is also called an “eye” of Veda, because it allows us to understand  the past, present and future.

Astrology is an ancient Vedic science and eye of Veda. it is calculation based predictive science of planets and stars. You can understand about your good and bad periods, also understand obstacles in your future and critical problems will come in future and can take precautions and have remedies. It is very ancient Vedic astrology from Vedas and more then 28, 000 years old for documented facts (Ref. Bhartiya Jyotish Page No. 28) and it has been born with Veda.

Jyotish Shastra is top most among other authentic and scientific literatures. It is also more popular Shastra compare to other Shastras.  Astrology is such a divine tool since ancient time for prediction of past, present and future for individuals. Astrology has diversified into many branches like Horoscope reading, Face reading, Vastu Shastra, Muhurta Shastra, Nimita Shatra,Prashana Shastra (Prashna Kundali)  Palmistry, Numerology, Varshaphala, etc.

Now a day’s Rasi Bhavisya /Phala is very popular and also telecasting  on many TV channels, publishing in leading news papers. Not only common people but  scholars and high professionals are keen interested and eager to know their future. Now we can understand that astrology will be more and more popular.

Astrology is divided in to three parts:

1)Samhita , 2)Hora, 3) Siddhanta.

1) Samhita:

It is the study of Geography, exploration of direction, architecture, horoscope match making, Vastu Shastra, Gruharambha, Gruha Pravesh, exploration of boring of well, finding out of Water, exact time for every occasion and starting new works, exploration of falling star, planetary current transits and all planets rise and set. 2)Hora:

It`s another name is ''Jataka Jyotish'', It is the predictive astrology for human life, prediction based on Kundali or Horoscope. Hora is predicting  horoscope according to the calculation base of  Siddhanta Jyotish. ''Hora'' word is beginning from the word ''Ahoratra'', ''Aho'' mean day and ''Ratra'' mean night, and first letter  ''Aa'' and last letter ''Tra'' are omitted and meddle two letters are accepted and come word "HORA''.  The basis of situation of  planets at the time, date, place  of birth of a person, considering and predicting  his future. As per Hora Shastra the position of planets and zodiac signs, and its aspect and conjunction, relation with other planets and zodiac sign are considering for prediction. we can understand and predict human's future .i.e. sorrow, happiness, wealth, progress, falling down,  bad effects,  Rajyoga(Royalty/become rich),  Daridrayoga, (Poverty), family happiness and issues, about children, about wife and husband, about marriage, about business, about service or job, education, struggle and growth, success or failure in life, good and bad periods. It has been researched and analyzed many important factors and considering and used for more and more prediction purpose.

Our respected Sages and many scholars had researched based on this Hora Jyotish and written may books that are very useful for many astrologers and interested people as well as students. In Hora Jyotish some changes had happened like ancient time kings used elephant for journey and now a day's Ministers and C.M., P.M. etc. are using Car/Aero plane and other vehicles. Our very famous and respected scientist or sage Varaha Mihira researched and written incomparable books about Jyotish. Like Bruhajjataka, Laghujataka, Vivah Patala, Bruhad Samhita, Pancha Siddhantika, etc.

3) Siddhant / Siddhanta:

It is a time calculative science of Indian astrology. Calculation of movement of planets, stars,  throughout the time, as well as transitioning of the full moon(Purnima) to dark moon(hidden moon/Amavasya). It is the base of mathematical formula and science with the help of Siddhanta measurement of time i.e. nine type of timing calculation is considered.

Navavidh Kalmanam  (Nine types of time measurement):

ब्राह्मं दिव्यं तथा पैत्र्यं प्राजापत्यं गुरोस्ताथा।

सौरं च सावनं चान्द्रमार्क्ष्मं मानानि वै नव।।

-सूर्यसिद्धांत १४.१

Meaning: 1)Bramha man, 2)Divya/Daiv man, 3)Paitrya/Pitru man, 4)Prajapatya man, 5)Guruman/Samvatsra man, 6)Soura/Sun mana, 7)Savan man,8) Chandra/Moon man and 9)Nakshatra man (man=unit)

In Siddhant Jyotish so many Yantra (Machine) have developed after analyzed and researched,  it is used for time measurement like Nalika Yantra, Jal Gati, Falaka Yantram, Sanku(Pyramid), etc. Algebra and Arithmetic's are formed  based on Siddhanta Jyotish.

Hora Jyotish is also divided in to three parts i.e. 1)Siddhanta Mathematics , 2) Tantra Mathematics, 3)Karana Mathematics.

1) Siddhanta Mathematics is calculation method of Spashta Graha (appearing Planets)by counting from Sustryadi day to Required day and making ''Ahargan'' and calculate the  planet, it is called Siddhanta Jyotish.

2)  Tantra Mathematics is calculation method of Spashta Graha (appearing Planets) by counting from Yugadi day to Required day and making ''Ahargan'' and calculate the  planet, it is called Tantra Jyotish.

3) Karana Mathematics is calculation method of Spashta Graha (appearing Planets) by counting from Kalpita Assumed (supposed)required year formatted as Yuga and considering specific day`s find out the  Ahargana and calculate the  planet, it is called Karana Jyotish. Once it was its higher and extreme position but now a day's its ignored and nobody is interested this Siddhanta Jyotisha as now many  readymade, Panchanga, ephemeris, computer/mobile/tablet/palmtop and other software/application  are available in market, also through satellite and computer calculation are available, that is why use of above mathematic method is not practicing  widely. Out of India this Shastra is widely used like Germany etc., today also. In my opinion this all three mathematical methods to be used and to give priority also give protection by government and scholars. if there will be any problem with satellite or in computers, in emergency, in war, hacking of technology, satellite hacking  etc.,  chance of miscalculation may expect and it method can be used. This method is very ancient, approved in every aspect as well very accurate and cheap.

Vedic culture is extremely very ancient, its born in Vedic time as per conservative estimate. Vedic culture has its own unique combination of  technology, Geography, cosmology, astronomy, theology, philosophy, arts, sciences, and many other literatures which exist in present  time also. Vedic  Jyotish Shastra  is mandatory and integral part of our Vedic culture and has been practiced since time primeval / immemorial. The Vedas have six supplementary  limb / organ.  The Rushi -Muni / sages many Rushi-Muni (Sages) maintained the tradition of  Vedic astrology on a parallel track with the Vedas, for  thousands of years. This have been researched at more and more times and it has proved as real and considered as authentic science.

Eighteen Rushi -Muni / sages have founded the Jyotish Shastra (Astrology and Astronomy) :

सूर्यः पितामहो व्यासो वसिष्ठोत्रिः पराशरः।

कश्यपो नारदो गर्गो मरीचिर्मनुरंगिराः।।

रोमशः पौलिशश्चैवच्यवनो यवनो भृगुः।

शौनकोष्टादशैवैते ज्योतिः शास्त्रप्रवतकाः।।

-कश्यपसंहिता १.२-३

Eighteen Sages/Rushi-Muni such as 1) Surya, 2)Pitamah, 3)Vyash, 4)Vashith, 5) Atri, 6)Parashar, 7)Kasyap/Kasypa, 8)Narad, 9) Garga, 10)Marichi, 11)Manu, 12)Angira, 13) Lomash, 14)Poulish, 15)Chyavan, 16) Yavan, 17)Brugu, 18)Shonak/Shnaka were Founders  and scientist of astrology and taught it to their disciples in the Guru Parampara (Teaching tradition).

Before the beginning of the present age, first part of Kali-Yuga, The current Kali Yuga began at midnight 17 February / 18 February in 3102 BC (in the prolepsis Julian calendar).  As per the information above about Yuga periods, only 5,115 years are passed out of 432,000 years of current Kali Yuga, and hence another 4,26,985 years are left to complete this 28th Kali Yuga of Vaivaswatha Manvantara.

Sages Kasyapa, Narada, Parashara,  are founded, analyzed, Brainstorm/ churn of the essence of the Vedic astrology and started various schools of Vedic astrology present at their time and distilled it into the texts known as the Kasyap Jatakam, Kasyap Samhita, Narada Samhita, Brhad Parashara Hora Sastra. Sage Parashara taught this Vedic astrology  text to his disciple sage Maitreya and Maitreya taught it to his disciples and it was passed in this way time to time. Thus, the basic school of Vedic astrology practiced in India is called the Parashara School of astrology. At the present time Parashara`s  prediction is considering and it is very authentic and effective. Parashara was among the great scientist among sages of the Vedic times. After sage Parashara's time, ancient Vedic astrology is preserved by his followers. Famous and notable amongst them were Satyacharya and in particular Varaha Mihira (Bruhajjataka, Laghujataka, Bruad Samhita, Pancha Siddhantiaka etc. were Witten by Scientist sage Varaha Mihira)  and Satyacharya who written several important texts on Astrology like Faldeepika etc.

After them several other texts were composed which are also considered "classics" of Vedic astrology, such as Muhurta Chintamani, Balbodh, Muhurta Martand, Muhurta Ganpati, Muhurta Sara, Muhurta Deepak, Muhurta Muktavali, Ramal Nava Ratna,  Bhav Kutuhalam, Bhadrabahu Samhita, Prasna Chandeswara, Prasna Marga, Keraliya Prasnaratnam, Tajik Nilkanthi, Tajik Bhushan, Tajik Sra, Jyotish Kalpataru, Jataka Tatvam, Saravali, Jatakabharan, Chamatkar Chintamani,  Jataka Parijata, Jatakalankar, Sarvartha Cintamani, Sighra Bodh, Sahdev Jyotish Sara, Sat Panchasika,  Horasara,  Hora Ratna And Mansagri etc., All of these texts followed  as Vedic astrology in their teachings.

Astrology remains an important aspect in the lives of many religions. In Hindu culture, newborns are traditionally named based on their Zodiac sign of Moon, and astrological concepts are pervasive in the organization of the calendar(....Year, Month, Day, Ghati, Pal, Vipak etc.) and holidays as well as in many areas of life, such as Match making, Muhurata (exact time of starting particular work), knowing sun and moon eclipse, understanding rainy season, Dikshadhanam(finding out of exact direction), planet and star`s rise and set, longitude and latitude measurement and its calculation, phasis of moon (chandra kala), opening a new business, beginning of education, Garbhadhan  (Fertilization of human being), Simanta, exact timing of all ceremony`s, , exact timing of all Rituals & Yagnas,   prediction of future, Gruha Pravesha (moving into a new home), Pitru sharddha timing, calculation of time with many measurement, cosmic effects with remedies, earth quack and effect, calculation of speed and zodiac transits. some Indian universities offer advanced degrees in astrology like M. S. University of Baroda, Vadodara, Gujarat, Sampurna-nanda Viswavidyalaya, Kashi, Banarash, Kashi Viswavidyalaya Varnasi, Banaras, U.P. etc.

There are sub branches of Jyotisha shastra`s (SAMHITA,  HORA and  SIDDHANTA) six important branches:

1) Gola :     Planets and stars positional and fundamental astronomy
2
) Ganita : mathematical diagnostic tools for analyzing the results of Gola, time mesurement and calculation, horoscope calculation etc.
3
) Jataka : predictive astrology, Horoscope prediction etc.
4) Prasna : Prasna Kundali (answering specific questions based upon the time, date, place of the                    question is asked)
5) Muhurta : selecting an auspicious time to start something
6) Nimitta :    omens and portents.

Ancient Indian Vedic astrology spread to the Persians and from the Persians to the Babylonians, and from them to the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. With the rise of Islam the Arabs learned astrology from both the Greek Hellenistic astrologers on one side (the West) and Vedic astrology from India on the other side (the East). In the West astrology has had its difficulties because its incomplete. This broken Western astrology has not helped the existence of learning or building up of experience over the period. Therefore Western astrology is fraught with many omission,  black spots, lost or missing parts and segregation or disconnection. By contrast, Indian ancient Vedic astrology has an unbroken tradition more than 28000 years old, and its disciples reap the advantage of such a long unbroken tradition such as a large body of classical philosophical literature and its content is knowing by astrologer, disciples and all human beings on the earth.
